Leona Humchitt
In honour of those who journey with us in Spirit
Leona Humchitt was a proud member of the Heiltsuk First Nation in Bella Bella, a remote and isolated community located on the central coast of British Columbia.
As a visionary leader deeply rooted in her community, Leona was dedicated to creating a better future for the next generations. She served as the Climate Action Coordinator for the Haiłzaqv Nation, where she worked towards environmental sustainability, governance, and community engagement.
A lifelong learner, Leona earned an MBA in Indigenous Business and Leadership from Simon Fraser University, along with a Graduate Certificate in Aquaculture from the University of British Columbia.
Her leadership and passion extended far beyond her Nation. Leona was part of the 2019 cohort of Indigenous Clean Energy’s 20/20 Catalysts Program and a champion of the Indigenous Off-Diesel Initiative (IODI).
Leona also served as a mentor and was a valued member of the ICE advisory board. Her laughter, wisdom, and optimism inspired everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her.
Family was at the heart of Leona’s life. Alongside her husband, Tommy, she raised five children—Flora, Kristy, Mercedes, Cheryl, and Thomas—and was a proud grandmother to Taylor, Kalieah, Maggie, Cassian, Charlie, Koda, Addie, Mckenna, Metaya, Benji, and baby girl Saylor. She cherished this role deeply, finding strength and joy in the love of her family.
We remember our dear friend, Leona Humchitt, and will honour the legacy she left behind and the memories we hold of her.
