Communications Manager

Position Summary

The Communications Manager will play a key role in effectively promoting the organization’s brand, mission, programs and participants. They will bring expertise to implement the ICE Communication Strategy to shape ICE’s image and values and find the appropriate methods to communicate them to the public. The Communications Manager will lead the development and timely delivery of initiatives that support ICE in its communications, public relations, and messaging strategies.

  • Develop and ensure the implementation of the ICE Communication Strategy to increase brand awareness; 
  • Lead the production of the ICE annual report; 
  • Oversee the production of ICE monthly newsletter; 
  • Oversee the execution of social media content and targeted campaigns;  
  • Supervise all ICE collateral material production; 
  • Supervise and collaborate with the design of all ICE creative materials; 
  • Develop relationships with other climate and environmental non-profits;  
  • Oversee the development of various communication initiatives;  
  • Write news releases for ICE announcements; 
  • Implement media relations with national, regional and local media; 
  • Monitor media and all content relating to the issues and policies about ICE’s advocacy – domestic and international;  
  • Video editing assistance;  
  • Advise on video/audio production  
  • Oversee the management of the CRM tool (Nimble); 
  • Supervise and guide the 20/20 Catalyst in Action profiles production; 
  • Provide guidance on developing digital storytelling 
  • Copyedit all ICE collateral material  
  • Support the planning and delivery of ICE events both internally and externally (i.e. The Gathering)  
  • Ensure that the ICE Brand and the range of Indigenous clean energy stories, impacts and opportunities are regularly brought to the attention of senior and programmatic leaders with governments, the energy sector, Indigenous organizations, private corporations, foundations and the financial firms;  
  • Manage all media inquiries and speaking opportunities (identify the right spokesperson and direct media/organizations to them) 
  • Provide support to the ICE team getting prepared for speaking opportunities. Assist to dry-runs, ensure they have up-to-date presentations decks and discuss talking points.  
  • Measure and analyze current communications efforts; 
  • Other related duties as required. 

          Education, Experience & Skills

          • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or equivalent media industry experience; 

          • Minimum two years experience in communications managing social media platforms and developing content for multiple platforms; 

          • Experience in journalistic principles, grammar and communications guidelines; 

          • Proficient English language writing, editing and speaking is essential. Bilingualism is a strong asset. 

          • Familiar and comfortable with general web technologies;  

          • Experience working with the Axero Communifire platform is considered a significant asset; 

          • Knowledge and understanding of contemporary concerns and issues related to Indigenous communities in Canada; 

          • Knowledge of graphic design, including use of Adobe Creative Cloud; 

          • Ability to take directions and work independently; 

          • Effective critical/analytical thinking and problem-solving skills; 

          • Ability to apply sound judgment and make decisions within the area, often on short notice; and 

          • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and organize work effectively and under pressure; 


                • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to cultivate, develop and manage good working relationships 

                • Fluency in English is essential. Bilingualism is an asset 

                • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines   

                • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
