OTTAWA, ON, May 11, 2021 – Indigenous Clean Energy Social Enterprise (ICE) announced today the official launch of Generation Power, an Indigenous youth clean energy and career training program.
Generation Power is designed after successful Indigenous-led educational and training programs and focuses on collective learning through cohort-based instruction, peer-to-peer mentoring and on-the-land education.
The program will go beyond simply engaging more Indigenous youth to explore careers in the clean energy economy. Generation Power aims to become a crucial piece in the clean energy landscape in Canada while positioning Indigenous leadership as an essential component of the clean energy transition.
Leveraging ICE’s existing capabilities and capacity-building expertise (i.e. 20/20 Catalyst program, Bringing it Home, ICE Network), Generation Power will play a critical role in continuing to advance ICE’s mission to stimulate collaboration that facilitates and recognizes leadership by Indigenous peoples in the transition to a clean energy future.
“For years, the ICE Network, our ICE Board of Directors and Advisory Council have asked for youth-specific programming to better support current and future generations lead the energy transition. I’m ecstatic that we have officially launched Generation Power, a program led by and for Indigenous youth,” said Eryn Stewart, ICE’s Managing Director and Generation Power Director.
Taking a future-focused approach, Generation Power introduces Indigenous youth to the growing clean energy economy in Canada and around the globe, and the broad range of existing and emerging energy careers.
The program, which has over one year of extensive research and planning behind it, was initiated by Samantha Matters, Director at Future Ancestors, and spearheaded by Ricky-Lee Watts, ICE Youth Programming Manager, and Layane Moura, Program Coordinator.
“Congratulations to our team for creating this exemplary model of a strengths-based capacity-building program that allows Indigenous young people to explore a range of career opportunities encompassed in the energy economy,” concluded Stewart.
