Through capacity-building, career training, and mentorship with high quality and hands-on programming, ICE supports Indigenous Peoples in their clean energy journeys, while promoting meaningful collaboration with energy companies, utilities, governments, development firms, clean tech innovators, the academic sector, and capital markets.

ICE is a fully remote workplace with hybrid options for those who live in several areas within Canada. Our headquarters is currently located in Ottawa, but we have plans for an on-reserve office in the near future.
Position Summary
The Director of Finance is responsible for managing the financial and administrative support functions of the organization, ensuring its financial health and sustainability. The Director of Finance provides oversight and leadership of the following ICE teams: Finance, HR, Communications, Partnerships, and Impacts and Learning. This role will oversee all financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and compliance requirements.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the role supervises managers and informs the Executive Director on progress and performance of the divisions the role oversees. The Director of Finance will work alongside the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals. The role also develops and oversees the annual budgeting process, working closely with ICE directors and program managers to develop realistic and achievable budgets. The Director of Finance also ensures ICE meets financial compliance requirements, ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Supervise the ICE Finance team, including accounting, cash flow, banking, payments, and report generation;
- Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all donor segments; oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting;
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process; liaise with external auditors and the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors; assess any changes necessary;
- Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Executive Director; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status;
- Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting;
- Implement a robust contracts management system to augment the existing financial management/ reporting system; ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements;
- Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices;
- Regularly update the Finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual;
- Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the Board of Directors;
- Contribute to and oversee the grant application process and work with the Partnerships Manager to account for grant dollars received;
- Develop a charitable arm and an endowment fund for ICE to continue to benefit Indigenous communities.
Human Resources, Operations, and Administration
- Further develop ICE human resources and administration, enhancing professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, training, and recruiting;
- Oversee and manage a comprehensive KPI program led by the Learning and Evaluation Manager to continue to promote growth within ICE teams and produce metrics to reflect ICE’s outputs;
- Work in conjunction with Executive Director and HR Manager to develop and approve employees’ annual performance goals and work plans;
- Work closely and transparently with all external partners, including third-party vendors and consultants, including our IT service provider;
- Oversee the Communications team as they support ICE’s corporate and program-specific needs;
- Oversee administrative functions, including facilities management, to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales;
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum of a BA, ideally with an MBA/CPA or related degree;
- At least seven to ten years of overall professional experience; ideally six-plus years of broad financial and operations management experience;
- Experience working for or with Indigenous communities or organizations is preferred;
- The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area, and has preferably overseen a human resources function previously;
- Ability to translate financial concepts for – and to effectively collaborate with – programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds;
- A track record in grants management;
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Peoples in so-called Canada and internationally, their cultures, histories and traditions;
- Knowledge and understanding of contemporary concerns and issues related to Indigenous communities in Canada;
- Understanding of energy efficiency projects and initiatives and an appreciation for Indigenous participation in this space;
- Fluency in English is essential; French is an asset;

- Commitment to training programs that maximize individual and organizational goals across the organization, including best practices in human resources activities;

- Keen analytic, organizational, and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision-making;
- Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders;
- A multitasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment;
