Program Summary
The Regional Energy Advisor Training Program is a new initiative from Indigenous Clean Energy that is building up Indigenous energy experts across the country. This program will make it easier for Indigenous communities and housing providers to access energy audits and find ways to reduce utility bills through energy efficiency actions.
The training will be delivered to 15 Indigenous people across Canada that work with regional organizations, such as Housing Authorities and Corporations, Tribal Councils, or Technical Service Groups. Once certified as NRCan-Registered Energy Advisors, the EA and their organization will be able to deliver home energy audits.
What is an NRCan-Registered Energy Advisor?
An NRCan Registered Energy Advisor can evaluate houses for their energy performance and provide recommendations to improve energy efficiency and comfort. The evaluations they deliver are EnerGuide certified and can be used to apply for retrofit grants and programs, such as NRCan’s Greener Homes Initiative.
How it Works
How to become an NRCan-Registered Energy Advisor?
Becoming a registered energy advisor requires you to pass the Foundation Level Exam, the Energy Advisor (House) Exam and complete a minimum of seven probationary audits with a Service Organization. Each part can be prepared for through a series of workshops.

What costs are covered?
The program will cover:
- Workshop fees
- Exam fees
- Travel costs for in person sessions
- Blower door and audit kit (conditionally provided to employer)
- Participant stipends
- Participant supports (i.e. Childcare, Internet access, etc.)
Who should apply?
The primary focus of this program is to train people from organizations that supports housing regionally. People who don’t fit this description should reach out to discuss their application.
Ideally, candidates are working in a space that provides technical services to a housing organization or will be brought on specifically to fill an energy advisor role.
Mandatory:
- Valid Drivers License
- Ability to commit to training
- Commitment to staying current in building science technology
Knowledge and skills in the following areas would be an asset:
- Computer Programs (Typing, using software, etc.)
- Basic Math
- Basic Writing Skills
- Residential Construction Practices
- Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning
- Geometry
- Building Science
- Energy Efficiency
- Energy-Efficient Renovation Practices
Commitments
The program requires the participants to commit to having the time and equipment needed to complete training, in addition to these, the participant will need additional equipment to complete energy audits
- Ability to travel
- Access to reliable transportation
- Computer
- Access to reliable internet
*For virtual training sessions, participants will need to have a computer that has internet access, a pdf reader, a webcam, and a microphone.
Time Commitments:
The program will deliver over 100 hours of workshops, virtual sessions and in person training from April 2023 until December 2023.
Training sessions will take place virtually on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm– 4pm EST
Drop-in study sessions will be 1.5 hour sessions
- April - May: Meet twice a week to covering building science and foundation level exam prep
- June: Drop-in study sessions and writing foundation level exam
- July - September: Meet once a week to cover modelling and regional circle sessions
- October: Meet for one week in person for Energy Advisor exam prep and Indigenous Enhanced workshop
- November: Meet once a week for further Indigenous Enhanced workshops
- September - December: Complete independent probationary files with Service Organization
