Jean-Paul is a professional engineer and a community wind and renewable energy researcher, consultant, advisor, and advocate. After decades of managing JP Pinard Consulting, Jean-Paul has formalized his partnership with his wife, Sally Wright as Wind Heat North. The company’s focus is to empower Northern communities to develop wind as a revenue source for their economic well-being.

Jean-Paul received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo and wandered into Whitehorse in 1992. His calling to renewable energy came in 1996, and he returned to university (University of Alberta) to pursue a master’s degree and then a PhD on the wind climate of the mountainous Yukon.

He has assessed the wind energy potential in dozens of communities across all three Territories of Northern Canada. Additionally, he has installed and maintained over forty wind monitoring stations over the course of his career. Jean-Paul’s vision for the Yukon and Canadian remote communities is to be carbon-free and gain economic wealth from renewables and energy efficiency.

Why do you like mentoring with ICE?

Mentoring with ICE allows me to share my experiences and technical knowledge of wind and renewable energy systems. I want to assist energy champions from northern and other remote Indigenous communities to reduce fossil fuel reliance and generate energy from renewables to meet all of their community needs.

Who would you like to mentor with ICE?

Northern community energy champions with a special interest in wind and thermal storage projects
